HELPING YOUR CHILD SUCCEED IN SCHOOL:
ORGANIZE:
Sit with your child periodically
and help him/her organize the bookbag and all necessary school
materials. Develop a system that is consistent and easy to
use. Students often lose important worksheets and fail to turn
in homework because they cannot find it.
HOME LEARNING:
Home learning is an integral
factor in fostering the academic achievement of students and in
extending school activities into the home and community.
Homework/home learning should provide reinforcement and
extension of class instruction. It should serve as a basis for
further study and preparation for future class assignments.
Students are responsible for: completing assigned homework/home
learning as directed; returning homework/home learning by the
designated time; and submitting homework/home learning
assignments that reflect attention to careful detail and
quality. Additionally, the District’s Comprehensive Reading
Plan mandates that all students read for thirty minutes each
night. Hammocks Middle School provides students with a homework
planner in which to write their assignments daily. Parents are
encouraged to check the planner each evening and ensure that the
students have completed the assigned work. Parents can enforce
this by taking away privileges (short term is best) and giving
rewards or privileges when this is done correctly.
HOMEWORK/HOME LEARNING HELP AND
TUTORING: The National
Junior Honor Society provides free homework help in the Media
Center, Monday though Friday, from 8:20 a.m. to 8:50 a.m.
MONITORING STUDENTS’ PROGRESS:
-
Does your child use the
homework planner daily to keep track of assignments?
-
Do you check your child’s
grades on-line on a weekly basis?
-
Do you regularly visit the
school’s website for updates?
-
Do you ask your child for the
school calendar at the beginning of the month?
-
Are you familiar with your
child’s teachers, counselor and administrator?
-
Are you aware of the many
extracurricular activities that Hammocks provides?
CHECK YOUR CHILD’S GRADES
ON-LINE: You can check
your child’s grades on-line by logging on to
www.dadeschools.net and clicking on “Parent Portal”. In
order to do this, you will need to come in person to the
attendance office, with identification, to receive your child’s
PIN number.
GRADING
CRITERIA
Students are required to earn a
minimum of 10 points in a subject to receive credit in that
subject for the school year. Below is an explanation of how
letter grades are converted to points:
Nine week course grades are worth
the following points:
A = 8 points
B = 6 points
C = 4 points
D = 2 points
F = 0 points
Mid-term and final exam grades are
worth the following points:
A = 4 points
B = 3 points
C = 2 points
D = 1 point
F = 0 points
To obtain your total in each
subject, add the grades from each of the four grading periods
along with the mid-term and the final exam grades. This total
must be at least 10 in order to receive credit for the subject.
Example: 1st
2nd mid-term 3rd
4th final
exam exam
Math C
C F F C D
4 +
4 + 0 + 0 + 4 + 1
= 13 points (pass)
Science D
D D F D D
2 +
2 + 1 + 0 + 2 + 1
= 8 points (failure)
Please note that the
numerical/letter grades are as follows:
3.50 – 4.00 = A
(90-100)
2.50 –
3.49 = B (80-89)
1.50 –
2.49 = C (70-79)
1.00 –
1.49 = D (60-69)
.00 –
.99 = F (0-59)
HAVE YOU
HEARD ABOUT THE BENJAMINS?
As
a way of encouraging our students at Hammocks Middle School to
participate in activities to increase academic achievement and
attendance and to become positive, contributing members of
society, we will be continuing our “Hammocks Benjamins.” As an
incentive to achieve their goals, students can collect “Hammocks
Benjamins” which will serve as “money” which students will be
able to collect and then spend at the Hammocks Middle School
Store. Students can earn “Benjamins” for the following:
o
100% attendance during a nine week period
o
Honor Roll
o
All “A’s” in conduct on their report cards
o
Administrator/Counselor/Teacher discretion
o
“Student of the Month”
